HÀ NỘI – “Tro tàn rực rỡ” (Glorious Ashes) by Bùi Thạc Chuyên won the "Golden balloon" award (Montgolfière d'or) at the Festival des 3 Continents 2022 which took place in Nantes, France, from November 18 – 27.
Adapted from two short stories ‘Tro tàn rực rỡ” and “Củi mục trôi về” by writer Nguyễn Ngọc Tư, the film was honoured for the poetic beauty depicted in its shimmering and enchanting frames.
The 116-minute movie features the fates of three women in a poor rural area and the means they adopt to keep their men. Beating nine other movies, Glorious Ashes took the top prize at the 44th edition.
"We gave the award to this film for the poetic beauty of the world the film portrays, which is both shimmering and bewitching, as well as for the loving and very mischievous portrayal of its heroines," the jury declared.

Chuyên left the festival early to prepare for the movie’s launch in Việt Nam.
Chuyên is one of the established directors of Vietnamese contemporary cinema. He began his film career in 1991 with the short film Eternal Sadness. His debut feature film, Living in Fear was awarded the Asian New Talent Prize for Best Film at the 2006 Shanghai International Film Festival.
His documentary about ordinary people during the COVID-19 pandemic, entitled Không Sợ Hãi (No Fear), won the Silver Kite Award in the Documentary Category of Việt Nam's Golden Kite Awards 2021.
Glorious Ashes became the first Vietnamese film to attend the Competition Section of the 35th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) from October 24 to November 2.
Female writer Nguyễn Ngọc Tư is a resident of Cà Mau Province whose works mainly portray the culture and lifestyle of southern farmers.
Her Cánh Đồng Bất Tận won the Southeast Asian Writers Awards from the Thai Royal Family in 2008.
As a return of Chuyên after over 10 years of absence, the film will be available for audience from December 2. VNS
