AN GIANG — Airport and accommodation projects are being accelerated on Phú Quốc Island in the southern province of An Giang as preparations gather pace for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in 2027.
The Ministry of Construction has approved an adjustment to the detailed plan for Phú Quốc International Airport for 2021–30, with a vision to 2050.
The changes cover aircraft parking and facilities supporting flight operations, including aircraft maintenance, fuel supply and catering, as well as land for commercial, accommodation and aviation training facilities.
Under the revised plan, about 51 hectares south of the airport will be allocated for hotels, commercial and service facilities, offices for lease and airline operations centres. A 12.6-hectare aviation training facility will also be added on reserve land in the north of the airport; it was not included in the plan approved in 2025.
The adjustment increases the number of aircraft parking stands. By 2030, about 42 stands are planned in front of Terminal 2 and in the existing apron area – 12 more than in the previous plan. A further apron, with about 45 stands, is planned between Terminal 1 and the VIP and general aviation area.
The aircraft repair and maintenance area in the north of the airport will expand from 24.7 hectares to 30.4 hectares, an increase of 5.7 hectares, or about 23 per cent.
The aviation fuel facility will move from the southeast to the north of the airport, with its area increasing from about 6.3 hectares to 7.2 hectares. The airline catering facility, previously planned for a site of about two hectares south of the airport, will be relocated to the southeast of Terminal 2, near the passenger service area and the new apron.

Hotel development is also being stepped up to meet expected demand during APEC 2027. The island currently has about 500 accommodation establishments, including more than 20 five-star hotels with nearly 11,000 rooms.
While this provides a substantial base, further capacity is needed to meet the scale and standards required for a major international event.
Sun Group has announced plans to develop more hotels on Phú Quốc, with the Bãi Đất Đỏ mixed-use urban area among its largest investments.
Spanning 88.4 hectares, the project has a total investment of about VNĐ82 trillion and is planned along APEC Boulevard. It will feature towers of up to 40 storeys, high-end hotels, shopping centres and a seafront plaza.
The centrepiece will be a cluster of 15 high-rise seafront hotels with nearly 6,500 rooms, forming a hotel complex in the heart of Phú Quốc, known as Việt Nam’s “Pearl Island”.
The development is planned to host 13 high-end hotel brands operated by five international hospitality groups. These include SO, Conrad and W Hotels, which are set to make their debuts in Việt Nam.
Sun Group expects the project to help establish Bãi Đất Đỏ – a beach in South Phú Quốc as an international destination while retaining its local identity.
APEC 2027 is expected to bring together leaders from 21 member economies, business representatives and international media. The event will place significant demands on the island’s transport, accommodation and services infrastructure.
Phú Quốc is a leading destination for tourism and resort living, renowned for its pristine beaches and rich biodiversity. Beyond its natural beauty, the island is emerging as one of the region’s most liveable island cities, with modern infrastructure, a dynamic economy and landmark developments of international stature. — VNS
