On August 25th, 2020, Vingroup gave the Ministry of Health DrAidTM Software and attached devices to give assistance in prognosis assessment in COVID-19 treatment. DrAidTM helps to rapidly identify abnormalities based on upright chest X-ray films in less than 5 seconds. Combined with PCR test, the software helps to improve accuracy of test results, reduce false negative test results and assists in enhancement of treatment consistency and in knowledge transfer from central-level doctors to grassroots-level doctors.

DrAidTM is the first AI (artificial intelligence) software in Vietnam and has been developed by VinBrain (VinGroup) since 2019 with an aim to assist in diagnosis of pulmonary, cardiac and bone diseases based on X-ray. It is currently used in 12 hospitals, 1 clinic and 1 system of mobile X-ray vans in Hanoi and adjacent cities.

As COVID-19 pandemic is getting worse, VinBrain has proactively coordinated and cooperated with the Electronic Health Administration (the Ministry of Health) in performance of a research named "Research on application of artificial intelligence (AI) to use of chest X-ray films in support of COVID-19 diagnosis in Vietnam", to integrate functions in support of COVID-19 patients' prognosis assessment into DrAidTM.

On August 18th, 2020, the research was assessed and accepted by the Scientific and Technological Council of the Ministry of Health. It was concluded that the research would be useful and practical in support of COVID-19 patients' prognosis assessment in hospital and health facilities in Vietnam.

Besides assisting doctors in diagnosing 12 signs, including No abnormality, Large cardiac silhouette, Dimmed air storage, Condensed damage, Block/Mark on lung, Pleural effusion, Pneumothorax, Bone fractures, Medical devices, Fibrosis, Other problems with pleura, Other abnormal signs, DrAidTM can identify abnormalities and position damages related to COVID-19 on upright chest X-ray films.

DrAidTM features four superior functions in COVID-19 identification and treatment based on upright chest X-ray films. These functions include Rapid identification of abnormalities in less than 5 seconds; Improvement of accuracy of test results and reduction of false negative test results when combined with PCR test; Assistance in patient prognosis assessment based on history of X-ray films for appropriate therapies; Assistance in enhancement of treatment consistency and knowledge transfer from central-level doctors to grassroots-level doctors.

"Following mastering of ventilator production technologies, successful research and development of SARS-CoV-2 test kits, DrAidTM software is a high-tech medical product that applies artificial intelligence to promptly assist in identification and treatment of COVID-19 patients. This not only shows Vingroup's dedication to a better society but also affirms Vingroup's right strategy of industry and high technology development", Mr. Nguyen Viet Quang, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Vingroup, said.

Human resource and financial resources of VinBrain are now ready for direct deployment of DrAidTM in hospitals/health facilities nationwide, of which, "center of pandemic" Da Nang and Central provinces will get priority in application of the software. Deployment activities include installation and instructions for software use and application given to hospitals for assistance in COVID-19 prevention and treatment./.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Long, the Acting Minister of Health:

Application of an AI software to COVID-19 diagnosis, prognosis and treatment in all health facilities nationwide

Making a speech at the ceremony of handover of the AI software for COVID-19 diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, given by Vingroup to the Ministry of Health, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Long, the Acting Minister of Health, emphasized that in the context of COVID-19 pandemic, Vingroup is one of the pioneers in assisting the health industry and Ministry of Health in many activities. Regarding ventilators, for example, Vingroup led the way in ventilator research and production right after discussing with related units. Consequently, the matter of ventilators is no longer a concern of the health industry. Vingroup is producing two ventilator models, VFS-410 and VFS-510, that are highly appreciated by the leading health agencies and hospitals of Vietnam and meet demands for treatment of COVID-19 and other diseases.

Right from the start, Vingroup also provided diagnostic biologicals, dialysis machines and some devices that are in shortage domestically. Besides giving support to the Ministry of Health, Vingroup assisted a lot of local authorities in prevention of and fight against the pandemic. One of products launched today, an AI software for COVID-19 diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, is an example of pioneering activities in the fourth industrial revolution.

The Acting Minister also highly appreciated the close cooperation between Vingroup and the Ministry of Health, especially the Electronic Health Administration, in deployment of AI applications for COVID-19 diagnosis and prognosis. This is an extremely meaningful step and it is expected that two parties would keep applying AI to treatment of diseases, such as cystic lung disease, pneumonia in the elderly, cardiac diseases, bone diseases, etc, to help doctors, especially grassroots-level doctors. This AI software for COVID-19 diagnosis, prognosis and treatment needs applying in all health facilities nationwide. In the future, data will be gradually screened and AI will be applied to other applications.

We fully expect a close cooperation between the Ministry of Health and Vingroup as well as other agencies, unit and enterprises, for acceleration of digital transformation and application of technologies to diagnosis, treatment and for better health care services for people, the Acting Minister of Health told.

How to deploy DrAidTM in hospital/health facilities:

Scenario 1: For patients suspected of having COVID-19 (with clinical/epidemiological features)
Step 1: Medical practitioners screen and classify patients based on clinical and epidemiological information

Step 2: Patients suspected of having COVID-19 (with clinical/epidemiological features) will undergo PCR test (like current PCR test) and X-ray examination. X-ray machines are integrated into VinBrain OneBox.

Step 3: X-ray films are automatically sent from X-ray machines via VinBrain OneBox to DrAidTM and results are generated within 5 seconds.

  • In case AI shows positive result, patients need to be isolated and PCR test result will be used for making of accurate treatment decisions.
  • In case AI show negative result, patients should undergo PCR test against.
  • In case AI and PCR test show negative result, patients will keep getting medical examination and treatment and will be supervised during medical examination and treatment.

Scenario 2: Patients not suspected of having COVID-19 (without clinical/epidemiological features) will undergo upright chest X-ray examination. X-ray films are automatically sent from   X-ray machines via VinBrain OneBox to DrAidTM and results are generated by AI within 5 seconds. DrAidTM will help to soon identify potential infections in the community and this is extremely important as COVID-19 pandemic is getting worse.
