HÀ NỘI — High schools students in Hà Nội collected more than 6.5 tonnes of waste paper and old books in five days during an event named “Lượm Đây” ( Collecting Day).

The event, which took place on July 10-12 and July 20-21, was organised by high school students with the assistance of Volunteer for Education (VEO) – a network of young people around the world who share the same passion of contributing to the development of the community.

Through voluntary educational programmes, VEO expects to bring long term educational benefits, career opportunities and a stable living standard for the poor and disadvantaged communities within Việt Nam.

Last month, VEO launched a project called “Striped Project,” which aims to raise charity funds and calls for further environment protection.

The collected paper and used bottles will be recycled to make products for sale. Revenue will be given to a children sponsor centre in the city, while the collected books will be donated to children through charity activities.

Under Striped Project, a fair will be organised next month, where handmade recycled products will be put up for sale and entertainment activities will be held to raise funds.

Nguyễn Nhật Hạ, a student of Hà Nội - Amsterdam High school, said the event attracted the youth because of its meaningful and practical actions.

Students, including primary and secondary ones, and their parents were happy to participate in “Collecting Day” and eager to make recycled gifts for the fair, the Government e-newspaper baochinhphu.vn reported. — VNS
