A powerful magnitude-5.3 quake with a focus in Hokkaido’s central and eastern Iburi regions occurred at around 8:58 am (local time) on Friday.

A lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 was felt in Atsuma, Mukawa and Biratori and 4 in Abira.

No tsunami warning has been issued.

Public broadcaster NHK reported that a woman in her 30s in the city of Sapporo has been slightly injured.

Japan's transport ministry says the New Chitose Airport near Sapporo is operating normally. Shinkansen bullet train service was stopped temporarily but has since resumed.

The region is still recovering after magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the region last month, leaving 40 people dead and hundreds injured.— The Japan News/VNS
