Every day, students at Tháp Mười High School visit each classroom and every corner of their school yard collecting water bottles to sell to scrap dealers.

Proceeds from the sales are donated to the Green Scholarship fund to support disadvantaged students at the school, located in the Mekong province of Đồng Tháp.

Lê Văn Tấn Đạt, a 12th-grade student, won a scholarship and used the money to prepare for an Olympic Competition in HCM City, where he won first prize in history.

“I’m aware that the scholarship funds were raised through my schoolmates’ collection of discarded bottles,” he says.

Teacher Nguyễn Văn Hậu says that students have been encouraged to pick up waste materials, especially plastic bottles, for environmental reasons as well as for scholarship needs.

In the last four years, more than 100 students at the high school have received Green Scholarships. VNS
