TÂY NINH — A 31-year-old woman has been sentenced to death by the Tây Ninh Province People’s Court for transporting nearly 8kg of methamphetamine.
Nguyễn Hằng Ni, from Phú Nhuận District, HCM City, admitted that at the beginning of last year, she began contacting a man named Alex via Zalo. The man claimed to be from Africa.
Ni used Google translate to communicate with the man.
Alex hired Ni to transport drugs, then send them from Việt Nam to Hong Kong. Ni would receive a payment of US$500-1,000 each time.
On July 15 last year, Alex told Ni to go to No 275C on Phạm Ngũ Lão Road, District 1 in HCM City, to receive the drugs.
Ni arrived at the address on July 17 and was caught by police.
The police had been tipped off because at 4pm on July 17, customs officers at Mộc Bài International Border Gate checked the luggage of a passenger named Hàng Quốc Khánh, who was travelling from Cambodia to Việt Nam.
The officers discovered 16 plastic bags containing suspected narcotics and took Khánh in for questioning.
Khánh told the officers that he was an assistant working for the Danh Danh Express Bus Company in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The company was ordered to transport the goods and Khánh was assigned to take the bags to Phạm Ngũ Lão Road to a woman named Ni.
