QUẢNG TRỊ — Specialists on Tuesday afternoon successfully removed 27 explosive devices from the garden of a resident in the central province of QuảngTrị.

Peace Tree Việt Nam’s staff on Tuesday dug the garden of Hồ Văn Giai, a resident in the province’s Pa Tầng Commune in mountainous Hướng Hóa District, to remove the 105mm howitzer shells to a safer place for defusing.

Earlier, Giai discovered part of a shell on the ground and informed related agencies. Peace Tree staff later found another 26 shells in a hole underneath the visible shell, including five shells with their original fuses.

According to Trần Văn Thành, a Peace Tree employee, the fuses on the unearthed howitzers were new and could explode due to external factors.

The howitzers were used by the US Army during the war in Việt Nam. Quảng Trị was hit the hardest by US explosive devices during the war due to its location between war-time North and South Việt Nam.

The province has the highest percentage of paralysed people in the country, with many wounded by unexploded devices post the war. — VNS
