ĐỒNG NAI (VNS) – Doctors from Đồng Nai General Hospital have removed a 11kg tumour from the abdomen of a 100-year-old woman.

It is the first time the hospital has conducted such a surgery.

The patient, Nguyễn Thị Chiên from Phú Cường Commune in Định Quán District, was hospitalised on Monday afternoon for an infection in her legs. Both legs were swollen and painful, and the woman had a large tumour in her abdomen.

The three-and-a-half hour surgery started at 1pm on Tuesday.

Doctors said the tumour was so large that it occupied the entire abdomen and blocked the women’s blood vessels, causing the infection in the legs.

Chiên’s family members said she had been taken to Chợ Rẫy Hospital in HCM City two years ago, but the tumour had not affected her health at that time, and so the doctors said surgery was not necessary.

Chiên is in stable condition now. -- VNS
