HCM CITY — A noodle shop at Lê Hồng Phong Market in HCM City’s District 10 is the best place for those who want to try a specialty noodle soup made in the style of Cambodia.

The prohoc noodles are known among Vietnamese as “mắm bò hóc” noodles or simply referred to as Cambodian fish noodles.

Ngô Văn Hoa, who runs the noodle shop, said that two years after he returned to Việt Nam from Cambodia in 1972 his family’s life started to become more stable thanks to the business.

"The key ingredients that give the dish its characteristic flavor are prohoc sauce (fish sauce made with beef), bamboo fruit and wormwood."

For first-time eaters, it could be daunting because prohoc sauce has a strong odor. The dish seems simple but is difficult to master. The main ingredients of the dish are copper snakehead fish and broth, he said.

The shop opens from 6am to 10am or until there is nothing left to sell.  VNS
