HCM CITY — The Phú Mỹ Hưng Development Corporation and Lawrence S. Ting Fund recently organised its 18th scholarship award ceremony, presenting 232 scholarships worth a total of VNĐ2.8 billion (US$120,000) to outstanding students in HCM City and other provinces.
Of the scholarships, each university student received VNĐ14 million ($605) per year. Each high-school student was awarded VNĐ6.3 million ($300) per year.
The Lawrence S.Ting fund also presented over VNĐ5.7 billion ($246,000) to the National Fund for Vietnamese Children, HCM City Fund for the Poor, Vu A Dinh Fund, HCM City Sponsoring Association for Poor Patients, Sponsoring Association for the Disabled and Orphans in HCM City, and associations for learning promotion in 63 provinces and cities.
Over the last 18 years, the fund has awarded 117,000 scholarships to outstanding students, worth VNĐ125 billion ($5.4 million).
Along with awarding scholarships, Lawrence S. Ting fund has also organised many programmes to support the community, focusing on the education and healthcare sectors.
In addition to giving scholarships, the fund for 15 years has spent over VNĐ180 billion ($7.7 million) to organise many programmes supporting Vietnamese education like “Moving Forward with IT”, “E-learning” competition, computers, and English summer camps.
Since 2009, with support from organisations and individuals, the fund has presented over 25,500 wheelchairs to people with disabilities.
In the health-care sector, the fund has carried out many programmes like setting up health-care centres, bringing doctors to Taiwan for study, giving health-care programmes to remote areas, and paying operation fees for disadvantaged people.
After 15 years, the fund has spent VNĐ341 billion ($14.7 million) to support education and health-care activities. — VNS
