HCM CITY — The number of daily high-speed boat services between Phan Thiết City and Phú Quý Island in Bình Thuận Province was increased from the current one to two starting on June 21.

It takes two and a half of hours by the new speed boat while normal vessels take six hours. The latter also make two trips either way daily.

Superdong Fast Ferry Kiên Giang Joint Stock Company bought a new boat for the additional service at a cost of nearly US$2 million.

Tickets cost VNĐ350,000 ($15), but only VNĐ260,000 ($11.4) for people with disabilities and VNĐ250,000 ($10.9) for children.

Phạm Văn Nam, vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said the additional fast service would contribute to the island’s socio-economic development.

The island lies 56 nautical miles from the mainland in an important strategic position.

It has an area of 17sq.km and a population of more than 27,000.

Since 1977, when the Phú Quý Island District was established, the lives of its inhabitants have improved. The average annual income last year was VNĐ30 million ($1,315).  — VNS
