While Hà Giang is justifiably known for its unspoilt landscapes, magnificent limestone mountains, steep roads and rich ethnic culture, it is the charm of its buckwheat flower fields that makes the northeastern province distinctive.
Buckwheat is cultivated for its grain-like seeds, which are used to make speciality foods by ethnic minorities in the mountainous region.
The crop is often planted around September, and from late October to early November carpets of buckwheat flowers are in full bloom, making for a spectacular sight. The hills and mountains are covered by the white and pink of the flowers.
The flower symbolises love and happiness, so many couples choose these fields for shooting their wedding photos.
Since many people are fond of taking photos in the fields, owners charge them VNĐ20,000 (US$0.8) for entering, making for an additional source of income. — VNS
