QUẢNG NAM — Members of the Women's Association of Điện Thọ Commune, Điện Bàn Township, have been busy almost every day since Châu Lâu Village and part of Đông Đức Village were locked due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Quảng Nam Province on August 2.

The local Women's Association established a group to help the 420 households of 1,800 people in the lockdown zone.

Head of the association Nguyễn Thị Lân said two women in lockdown areas were assigned to report residents' urgent needs to the Women's Association.

Women outside the locked down areas help families inside buy essential goods and deliver to them and support people in need.

Families in extremely difficult circumstances, old people living alone or families with relatives in quarantine sites get meals for free.

The association also calls for sponsors to provide additional necessities for the households in locked down areas.

"With the motto 'No one is left behind', we try our best to support the people in the locked down zones. The group with 12 people will take turns round-the-clock to help people if they need. The association also co-ordinates with local authorities to roll out information campaigns to raise awareness of the public on the COVID-19 disease," Lân told Dân Trí online newspaper.

Twice a day, Trần Thị Bông, a member of the Women's Association in Châu Lâu Village, gives a piece of paper with a list of essential goods to 340 households in the lockdown zone.

At about 3pm on the same day, she collects orders and lists of needed products and sends them to other women outside the zone to go shopping.

"Most families want to cook by themselves, so they need someone to help them buy food from the market. I used to be in the lockdown zone so I can understand their difficulties. We are willing to help whenever they need," Bông said.

"Many other women also volunteer to help them."

"This model is being implemented in many lockdown zones in Điện Bàn Township to help local residents go about their daily lives amid the COVID-19 pandemic," said Nguyễn Thị Nam Hải, chairwoman of the Điện Bàn Township Women's Union.

The township's Women's Union set up 20 voluntary teams, with 10 women in each team to help COVID-19 prevention forces in localities when needed.

The Women's Association of Điện Bàn Township has also launched many practical campaigns, like one to collect more than 100kg of vegetables and fruits to support people in locked down and quarantine sites, according to Hải.

The campaign also attracted other localities to join in.

The women sewed 6,000 fabric masks to give to local elderly and poor women.

More than 5,000 face shields were made to donate to traders in the traditional market and health workers at local medical facilities.

The Women's Association also donated three automatic hand washing equipment to check-points and Quảng Nam General Regional Hospital.

Hundreds of gifts, face masks, protective suits and hand sanitiser bottles were also granted to quarantine camps and poor households, while the women also take turns cooking meals for those in isolation sites and check-points. — VNS
