HÀ NỘI — Many donors yesterday, or the eighth day of the Lunar New Year, gave blood to help sick people in Hà Nội.

The sessions were held at the National Blood Centre under the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion in the capital.

Trần Thị Là, a 40-year-old living in the Cầu Giấy District, Hà Nội said she has donated blood five times.

“This year I choose to donate blood right at the beginning of the new year,” she said.

“It is known that after the Lunar New Year, there is often a blood shortage putting many patients in danger.”

Dr Vũ Hải Toàn, from the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, said the need for blood transfusion before Tết increased three to four times at the National Blood Center.

Currently, there are 300 patients being treated there.

“Especially during the period before and after the Lunar New Year there is a shortage of blood because this is a long vacation and the number of people donating blood is small,” said Toàn.

“If the number of patients is high, there will be insufficient blood and it becomes very dangerous.”

The institute called on people to donate blood from February 17, 2019 (13th day of the first lunar month) until February 24 due to very few blood donation schedules at the beginning. — VNS
