QUẢNG NAM — Quảng Nam Province’s functional forces caught six illegal sand mining vessels on Thu Bồn River across Điện Bàn Town on Monday, and arrested the persons responsible.

Lê Phan Minh Mẫn, head of the provincial waterway police team, said that the vessels were operated by Quảng Nam-based Tăng Phúc Hiền, Phạm Còn, Nguyễn Dũng, Phạm Tùng and Nguyễn Sự.

At the time they were caught, there was 200cu.m of sand found on the ships.

According to Mẫn, this activity is being continued due to the huge income it brings.

“This is the most serious case we have ever handled. We seized all vehicles, equipment and fined them at least VNĐ57.5 million (US$253),” he said. — VNS
