Cross-border drug trafficking busted

Police in the northern province of Điện Biên have uncovered six cases of illegal drug smuggling from Laos to Việt Nam.

ĐIỆN BIÊN — Police in the northern province of Điện Biên have uncovered six cases of illegal drug smuggling from Laos to Việt Nam.

The police arrested seven traffickers and seized some 5kg of opium.

Those arrested are Chang A Thào, Lầu A Páo, Hạng Thị Cờ and Lầu Thị Cài, as well as Lầu Thị Vang, Chang A Giàng and Tráng Thị Tùng.

All the arrestees reside in Mường Nhé District and work in Laos.

The traffickers bought the drug in Laos and brought it into Việt Nam to sell to local addicts and distribute in neighbouring areas. 

Colonel Nguyễn Ngọc Tường, head of Mường Nhé District’s Police said the district police in co- ordination with communal polices have monitored the smugglers for several months in areas along the border between Việt Nam and Laos.

On Monday, the police conducted an ambush and arrested the traffickers.

At present, the district police are continuing the investigation to find accomplices. — VNS
