HCM CITY — The HCM City People’s Committee has asked city departments and all 24 districts to prepare for natural disasters this year by completing maps about flooding hotspots and raising public awareness about disaster risks.
The maps will show the flood-prone locations that are often inundated with water caused by strong storms.
The district authorities were also urged to make preparations for community-based management of natural-disaster risks and propose guidelines in repairing flood-prevention construction.
To prepare for natural disasters, city authorities are using advanced science and technology, rechecking devices and rescue equipment, and making an effort to help connect fishermen’s boats to mainland communication systems.
The Department of Transport has been asked to remove decaying branches and trees before the storm season.
The city’s Steering Centre of Urban Flood Control Programme is responsible for managing, repairing and operating the water sewerage system, high-tide control culverts and valves, and pumping stations.
The people’s committees of districts 12, Bình Thạnh, Thủ Đức, Nhà Bè, Bình Chánh, Hóc Môn, Củ Chi and Cần Giờ, all located along the Sài Gòn River, have been asked to encourage investors to speed up the progress of their flood-prevention projects in the second quarter. — VNS
