HCM CITY (VNS) — The HCM City People’s Court yesterday launched the Family and Juvenile Court, the country’s first specialised court for children.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Trương Hòa Bình, chief justice of the Việt Nam Supreme People’s Court, said that the creation of the Family and Juvenile Court with the passage of the Law on Court Organisation was a major milestone for judicial reform.

Bình said the court would ensure that Vietnamese families and children were better served and protected by the judicial system.

He added that it showed the strong commitment of the Government to protect the rights of children.

The Family and Juvenile Court will help create a comprehensive juvenile justice system in coordination with other organisations.

It is expected to improve the efficiency, quality and time to deal with cases related to family disputes and children-related cases at the people’s courts.

The court hearing rooms, conciliation rooms, consulting rooms and kids’ corners are all designed in a friendly, comfortable way.

Eighteen judges and 18 secretaries have been trained with essential skills and knowledge, said Ung Thị Xuân Hương, chief justice of the HCM City’s People’s Court.

She said that divorce cases accounted for 40 per cent of the total cases at HCM City’s People’s Court.  — VNS
