THÁI BÌNH — The Investigation Police Agency of the Department of Public Security of the northern province of Thái Bình on Wednesday arrested and announced decisions to launch criminal proceedings against Lê Thanh Vân, a former deputy of the 15th National Assembly (NA).

He allegedly abused his position and power to influence others for personal gains in line with Article 358 of the Criminal Code.

These decisions were approved by the People's Procuracy of Thái Bình Province.

Earlier on the same day, the National Assembly Standing Committee issued a resolution agreeing with a proposal by the Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuracy to prosecute, detain and search Vân’s residence and workplace.

The resolution also temporarily suspends Vân's duty and powers as an NA deputy, effective from the date of issuing the prosecution decision.

Vân, 60, born in Hậu Lộc District in Thanh Hóa Province and residing in Hà Nội's Hoàn Kiếm District, holds a doctoral degree in law.

He served as a standing member of the NA's Finance and Budget Committee in the 14th and 15th terms. Vân has held a seat in the legislature for three consecutive terms, from the 13th to the 15th tenures.

This move is part of a wider investigation into a case involving Lưu Bình Nhưỡng, a former NA deputy, and his accomplices who are accused of appropriating assets and abusing position and power to influence others for personal gains in Thái Bình province. — VNS
