HÀ NỘI — The Laotian version of the historical-non-fiction book Biên Bản Chiến Tranh 1-2-3-4.75 (A War Account 1-2-3-4.75) by journalist and writer Trần Mai Hạnh was given to the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and Lao State as a gift by the Việt Nam Central Communist Party.
The book was among 14 other political books published by Việt Nam’s National Political Publishing House handed over in a ceremony at the headquarter of the Laos Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism in Vientiane on January 16.
The 756-page book, based on the Vietnamese version published in 2014, has literary and historical value. It collects and presents authentic documents, considered highly classified at the time by the Republic of Việt Nam (the Sài Gòn administration) and the United States of America.
The writer has quoted documents associated with important events of the country precisely and reliably. The book recounts and depicts in an accurate and lively manner the fall of the Sài Gòn administration with Nguyễn Văn Thiệu as its president in the last four months of the American war – from January to the end of April 1975.
Besides Nguyễn Văn Thiệu’s speech before his resignation, 20 other reference documents included in the annex are top-secret documents related to the war issued by the Republic of Việt Nam and the United States.
These original documents, dated more than 40 years ago, were collected from the residence of Nguyễn Văn Thiệu at the Presidential Palace and from the study of General Cao Văn Viên, chief of the general staff of the Sài Gòn armed forces, at his headquarters on April 30, 1975.
The book received the Việt Nam Writers’ Literature Award in 2014 and the Southeast Asia Write Award in 2015.
The English version of the book was released in April 2017. — VNS
