THỪA THIÊN-HUẾ — A brand new footbridge in the city of Huế in the central province of Thừa Thiên-Huế was put into use following an opening ceremony held on Tuesday afternoon.

The bridge is sponsored by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and is part of a project to reorganise sections of the Hương (Perfume) River banks that KOICA runs in the former imperial capital city of Huế.

The bridge is 380m long and 4m wide, running along the southern riverbank. Construction started in February last year and cost KOICA VNĐ64 billion (US$2.7 million). Its concrete foundation took the contractor eight months to build, while the lighting system took a further three months.

The concrete frame and struts were buried into the riverbed before the surface was covered in natural timber imported from South Africa. Walls of the bridge were built using bronze beams.

The bridge starts at a pier located in front of the provincial People’s Committee hall, runs beneath the Phú Xuân Bridge, and ends at another pier stayed in the middle of the Nguyễn Đình Chiểu pedestrian street in the city.

Local authorities expect that the bridge will lure more visitors to the city, particularly young people.

The footbridge made headlines last year over fears it would spoil the river as well as cause environmental damage. — VNS
