HCM CITY—Vietnamese-American singer Thanh Tuyền’s first live show in her native land will be held in HCM City this week to celebrate her 50-year career.
The concert, Tình Một Ngày Cũng Trăm Năm (Love for A Hundred Years), is expected to attract more than 1,000 people.
Thanh Tuyền has invited Việt kiều singers Thái Châu, Sơn Tuyền and Bằng Kiều to perform at the event.
She will also sing with Vietnamese singers Lệ Quyên and Hoài Lâm at the show, which will feature bolero songs that made Thanh Tuyền famous worldwide.
She will perform Con Đường Xưa Em Đi (The Way You Walked in the Past), Nỗi Buồn Hoa Phượng (Sorrow of the Flamboyant Flower), Duyên Kiếp (Fate in Love) and Chuyện Ba Người (Story of Three People), composed by artists Châu Kỳ, Thanh Sơn, Lam Phương and Quốc Dũng before 1975.
A series of vọng cổ, southern Việt Nam’s signature long tunes songs will also be featured.
Thanh Tuyền, whose real name is Nguyễn Như Mai, was born in 1949 in Đà Lạt. She began studying music when she was five years old. Two years later, she performed at the Thống Nhất Theatre in Sài Gòn (now HCM City).
In 1964, she signed an exclusive contract with the Continental Studio in Sài Gòn.
She quickly became popular and released several albums, and later won dozens of music awards presented by music producers and studios.
Thanh Tuyền and her family moved to the US and settled in Washington DC and then Houston in 1979.
She has worked with several music producers and entertainment companies in the US and France. She plays guitar and dances as well.
Tuyền sings the way she feels. “When I perform, the music and my emotions become one,” the 67-year-old singer said.
Tuyền’s live show will begin at 8pm on December 15 at the Adora Luxury Centre, 198 Hoàng Văn Thụ Street, Tân Bình District. Tickets are available at the theatre’s box office.— VNS
