BINH THUAN - On Thursday, representatives from AES Vietnam visited and presented Tet gifts to a number of poor and near-poor households in Song Phan and Son My Communes, Ham Tan District, Binh Thuan Province, to celebrate the upcoming Tet (Lunar New Year) festival.

The ceremony was organised in co-operation with the People's Committees of Song Phan and Son My Communes, with the attendance of representatives from local authorities, beneficiary households, and AES Vietnam.

Each household received a gift set valued at VND500,000, which included basic commodities for Tet. Gift sets were presented to 52 poor households in Song Phan Commune (mostly from the Rai ethnic minority group), and 48 poor households in Son My Commune.

Speaking about the initiative, David Stone, President of AES Vietnam, said: “After nearly 15 years of operating in Viet Nam, we fully understand the importance and meaning of Tet in Vietnamese culture. With these gifts, we hope to offer a warmer and more meaningful festive period to the poor, so Tet can be celebrated in every household and no one is left behind.”

Hoang Tuy, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Son My Commune, said: “I would like to offer thanks for the warm-hearted gifts from AES Vietnam. I appreciate that the company works with us to visit, support and encourage poor households in the district ahead of the traditional Lunar New Year.”

The Tet gifts are part of AES’ social impact programme, which aims to improve the quality of life for local communities, focusing on four main pillars – health, education, livelihoods and infrastructure.

In October last year, AES Vietnam presented scholarships to 120 students in Son My Commune and Ham Tan District, Binh Thuan Province. The scholarships were provided in collaboration with the Association for Promoting Education of Ham Tan District and Son My Commune, aiming to motivate students to advance their studies and help to cover a part of their educational costs.

About AES Vietnam

Its vision is to be a leading sustainable power company in Viet Nam that provides safe, reliable and affordable energy.

In November 2017, AES signed an MOU with PV Gas in the presence of US President Donald J Trump and late Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang to develop the $1.3-billion Son My LNG Terminal Project. In November 2019, AES also signed an MOU with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to develop a 2.2GW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant under the BOT scheme, which will be located in Binh Thuan Province. In October 2020, AES Vietnam and PV GAS inked a Term Sheet of the Joint Venture Agreement for Son My LNG terminal. AES, through its subsidiary, AES Mong Duong Power Company Limited, has successfully developed and arranged financing for the Mong Duong 2 Power Project of 1,242 MW with a total investment of approximately $2.1 billion.
