HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam on Wednesday reported three more COVID-19 recoveries, increasing the number of patients given the all-clear to 320 out of 332 infections.

The two patients at Hà Nội-based National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (NHTD), numbered 290 and 319, were quarantined upon arrival after returning to Việt Nam from Russia on May 13.

They are currently in a stable condition and will be in isolation over the next 14 days for monitoring. With two patients announced clear on Wednesday, there are only four COVID-19 patients undergoing treatments at NHTD.

The third recovered patient, numbered 321, was a 44-year-old male Vietnamese, quarantined at Củ Chi Hospital for Acute Respiratory Diseases in HCM City.

Việt Nam’s most critically ill COVID-19 patient, British pilot Stephen Cameron, saw remarkable improvement. He now can sit up, write, use his cellphone, and adjust the height of his bed after weeks in an induced coma, according to the Ministry of Health.

On Tuesday, leaders of Chợ Rẫy Hospital, where the patient was receiving intensive care following successful COVID-19 treatment at HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases, paid a visit to inspect his condition.

As of yesterday, Việt Nam has confirmed 332 patients with COVID-19. The country has gone 55 days without community transmission. All 192 imported cases reported recently were quarantine upon arrival.

In another development, Việt Nam has suspended a clinical trial designed to test the effectiveness of a tuberculosis vaccine against COVID-19 as there has been no community transmission for 55 days.

Professor Nguyễn Viết Nhung, director of Việt Nam National Lung Hospital, said last week that the research was highly appreciated by domestic and foreign experts.

However, the project was suspended due to an insufficient number of people exposed, so the effectiveness of vaccine protection could not be assessed, he said, adding that experts will wait for the assessment results from the countries that are conducting the study, for example, Australia and the Netherlands. — VNS
