BÌNH ĐỊNH — The Bình Định Department of Natural Resources and Environment has fined a sugar-processing company VNĐ1.9 billion (US$83,100) for discharging wastewater.

This is the largest administrative fine for environment-related violations in the province so far.

The Bình Định Sugar Joint Stock Company (often called Bisuco) discharged wastewater in the Côn River.

Tests of the department showed that six different norms related to environmental protection exceeded the permissible levels by nearly twice to 8,000 times.

Besides the administrative fines, Bisuco’s licence has been revoked for four-and-a-half months starting June 15 to improve its pollution levels. It has been forced to upgrade its wastewater treatment system.

Bisuco’s violations came to light last year. The Bình Định People’s Committee had warned the company many times, but it did not improve its working. Therefore, the committee decided to temporarily suspend its operations before imposing a fine. — VNS
