HÀ NỘI — A new storm has formed near the Philippines and is expected to cause heavy rainfall in the northern regions of Việt Nam.

At 7am on Friday, the tropical storm Pakhar was 240km southeast of the Philippines’ Luzon Island with the highest wind speed recorded between 60 and 90km per hour, the national forecast bureau said.

Over the next 24 to 48 hours, the storm will move northwest, towards China’s Leizhou Peninsula.

The storm is expected to cause heavy downpours of 20-40mm in the northern provinces of Thái Nguyên and Tuyên Quang in Friday afternoon.

Land erosion and flash floods are highly likely in Thái Nguyên Province’s Đại Từ and Định Hóa districts, and in Tuyên Quang Province’s Sơn Dương, Na Hang, Chiêm Hóa and Yên Sơn districts. — VNS
