ĐÀ NẴNG — Following six months of construction, the central city inaugurated its first road tunnel at the intersection of Lê Duẩn and Trần Phú streets on the west bank of the Hàn River on April 30.
The project, which covers an area of 21,000sq.m at a cost of VNÐ137.5 billion ($6.11 million), will ease rush hour traffic at the city’s most busy intersection with a two-lane tunnel on Trần Phú street.
The tunnel project also included two 200m-long open-air sections and a 40m underground tunnel, for both cars and motorbikes.
Last year, the city also began construction on a second tunnel at the junction of Điện Biên Phủ, Nguyễn Tri Phương and Lê Độ streets, using money from the World Bank-funded sustainable development project, with total investment of VNĐ220 billion (US$9.77 million).
Đà Nẵng, the third largest city in Việt Nam, has made significant investments in urban development, to become the largest city in the central region, as well as a green city by 2025, with funds from the World Bank.
In 2013, the World Bank agreed to provide $202 million for a $272 million sustainable development project to help build the city’s Bus Rapid Transit network, build new roads and revamp the city’s drainage system.
The bank also funded a five-year priority infrastructure project for the city, by covering 70 per cent of the total investment of $218.4 million.
In 2015, the city put into operation a three-level rail and road flyover at Huế Junction to alleviate congestion. — VNS
