GIA LAI – Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng has instructed the authorities of the poverty-stricken commune of Ayun, in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai, to focus on restructuring crops and husbandry, train officials and improve residents’ knowledge.

The production capacity of local residents remains low and highly-dependent on nature. They mostly grow one crop of rice over the course of a year, in addition to the cultivation of cassava, according to local authorities.

The commune recorded a per capita income of VNĐ7.8 million (US$350) per year, equivalent to one-sixth of the national average figure. The number of poor and nearly poor households account for 88 per cent of the commune’s total population. Ethnic minorities comprise about 98.7 per cent of the population.

The knowledge level among residents was limited, and poverty reduction efforts had not been effective.

Working with communal authorities yesterday during his working visit to Gia Lai Province, the Party Chief said the commune should mobilise efforts by the people in coordination with authorities at all levels to boost development.

He agreed with recommendations made by authorities of the commune and province concerning measures needed to help lift Ayun out of poverty, particularly proposals relating to continued investment in building Plei Keo hydropower plant in the commune.

The project is expected to provide irrigation water for 500ha of crops, including 400ha of rice.

The Party Chief urged relevant ministries and agencies to work to implement the project as scheduled to help the commune to develop. - VNS
