This year BAT Vietnam was also in the Top 5 companies in implementing the circular economy model in response to climate change based on performance points from the Corporate Sustainability Index.

Sustainable development is an integral part of BAT’s mission and strategy to build “A Better Tomorrow™” for the Group.

This mission is most clearly displayed through its commitment to reducing health impacts, and this commitment is well supported by excellent implementation in each area of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG).

BAT Vietnam’s sustainability goals are well aligned with its agenda and the aim of the Government to join hands with the business community to contribute to the 2030 National Agenda for Sustainable Development according to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

This commitment from BAT Vietnam is backed by clear, specific and measurable goals in each of its ESG initiatives.

In the case of the environment, BAT always strives to reduce the impact on climate across its value chain. It also adopts circular economy principles, making sure of zero waste to landfill at both operations sites while giving employees a chance to change and reduce their environmental impacts.

It also does its best to reduce the drawing of water and increase the use of recycled water to help ensure sustainable agriculture.

Biodiversity and afforestation are two other activities BAT focuses on to strive for excellence in environmental management.

With regard to the social aspect, BAT is committed to enhancing the livelihoods for all farmers in its supply chain by increasing incomes and crop yields.

For employees, ensuring zero accidents and a safe working environment has always been BAT’s top priority in addition to building a business culture of diversity, integration and solidarity. It also closely monitors compliance with human rights regulations across its value chain.

As for Governance, BAT Vietnam is committed to sustaining a culture of integrity, and full compliance with its Standards of Business Conduct and international marketing principles, ensuring responsibility across the organisation.

BAT’s efforts to achieve sustainable development and commitment to high standards have been recognised by prestigious external bodies in Vietnam as well as elsewhere in the region.

These aspects have been and will continue to be a focus for implementation as will be ceaselessly improving the indexes on all fronts to create and deliver long-lasting values for consumers, employees, society, the industry, and the Government.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Song Young Jae, General Director of BAT-Vinataba JV, a subsidiary in Vietnam, said: “To be named in the Top 100 Sustainable Businesses in Vietnam consecutively is a tremendous honor for BAT. Furthermore, this is valuable proof of our commitment to sustainable development in Vietnam.

“For each pillar of ESG, we continue to create a roadmap with clear and measurable goals and monitor the realisation of these goals thoroughly and consistently.”

Organised by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) through the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD), the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (VGCL), this marks the 7th year of the Programme for Benchmarking and Announcing Sustainable Companies in Vietnam (referred to as CSI).

The CSI 2022 programme began in May and stopped receiving entries on August 31st. From hundreds of candidates, the organising committee selected 146 companies to enter the final round and finally chose the Top 100 Sustainable Businesses to announce at the ceremony.

In November this year BAT released the 2021 ESG report, marking the celebration of its 27-year journey in Vietnam.

BAT is also a tobacco industry pioneer in ESG reporting. This provides a strategic vision with clear standards and goals while offering an overview of the company’s sustainability activities and achievements in 2021.
