HÀ NỘI — Hà Nội’s Trần Tuấn Minh won gold in the men’s standard chess event after nine rounds at the National Sports Games yesterday in the capital.

Minh, Elo 2,524, defeated his fellow Hanoians Trần Minh Thắng, Nguyễn Văn Huy and Bùi Vinh in the early rounds.

Though he lost to first seed Lê Quang Liêm, Elo 2,714 from Hồ Chí Minh City in the seventh, he recovered to win in the final two rounds.

Minh has undergone a busy year competing abroad. He will represent Việt Nam at Asian Chess Championship at the Philippines from December 9 to 19.

Liêm also won a gold in blitz chess with 8.5 points after nine rounds.

Meanwhile, Đoàn Thị Vân Anh from Bắc Giang Province won gold in women’s standard chess with 7.5 points after nine rounds, while Hoàng Thị Bảo Trâm from HCM City won the women’s blitz chess.

The team’s blitz chess and fast chess events begin today.

To date, host Hà Nội team rank top in the medal table with 106 gold medals, followed by HCM City with 87 and the Military team with 43. — VNS
