Điện Biên Police seize huge heroin haul

The Điện Biên Province Police have detained two persons who were caught transporting more than 170kg of heroin worth VNĐ70 billion ($3 million), claimed by the police to be the largest quantity of heroin seized in the country, so far.

ĐIỆN BIÊN — The Điện Biên Province Police have detained two persons who were caught transporting more than 170kg of heroin worth VNĐ70 billion ($3.1 million), claimed by the police to be the largest quantity of heroin seized in the country, so far.

The traffickers, who were arrested on Tuesday, were identified as Vù Chù Sếnh, 44, and Mùa Thị Đớ, 39, from Na Ư Commune, Điện Biên District.

They were transporting the heroin on two motorbikes. The heroin was hidden in six tea bags.

On being confronted by the police, the traffickers resisted with weapons, but they were overpowered. According to the police, it is the largest quantity of heroin seized in the country so far.

Colonel Lê Công Bính, deputy director of the provincial police said the traffickers tried to be clever, but the police outshone them by setting a trap and choosing the right time and place to deploy it.

On December 23, the Điện Biên Police also arrested three persons in Huổi Lèng Commune, Mường Chà District, for transporting nearly 30kg of heroin and 60,000 tablets of ecstasy.

In another development, the Hà Nội People’s Court on Wednesday returned its verdict on eight people, who were part of a heroin trafficking ring from the northern mountainous province of Sơn La to Hà Nội.

Two people – Nguyễn Thị Bích Nga, 49, and Nguyễn Văn Võ, 49, from Hà Nội – received the death sentence.

Six others – Thị Bình, 41; Trương Quốc Đông, 44; Ngô Trung Kiên, 23; and Trương Công Thành, 26, all from Sơn La, as well as Lê Văn Bằng, 34, and Nguyễn Văn Duy, 42, from Hà Nội – received the life sentence.

On May 12 last year, the police arrested Bình and Đông in the act of transporting nearly 700g of heroin and nearly 2kg of methamphetamine. Further investigations revealed that Bình and Đông joined hands with some others to set up a heroin trafficking ring from Sơn La Province to Hà Nội at the beginning of last year.

In another case, on December 6, 2017, the provincial Investigation Police Office arrested Trương Thị Thạch, 57, on Highway No 10 passing through Tứ Kỳ District. She was on her way in a taxi to transport more than 1kg of heroin, 1kg of methamphetamine and more than 2,000 tablets of ecstasy from the central province of Thanh Hóa to the northern port city of Hải Phòng for sale. — VNS
