PHÚ THỌ — Police in the northern Phú Thọ Province in coordination with the Crime Prevention Department and police in northern coastal Quảng Ninh Province and HCM City have arrested a group of people who set up fake websites to appropriate property.

The police seized several devices and equipment related to the operation of the webpage Gold 889.com at the house of Trần Văn Hạnh, leader of the group, in Việt Trì City.

Earlier on October 3, police in HCM City collected data from servers located in the Tân Thuận Đông Industrial Park in District 7.

At the police station, Hạnh confessed that he had taken part in many virtual games on the internet and spent a lot of money on them. While playing, Hạnh realised it was easy to profit from the games.

Hạnh convinced Nguyễn Ngọc Tuyên, 26, living in the same city, to buy the domain Gold.com of the Vietnix Technology and Solution Joint Stock Company in HCM City’s Tân Bình District. Hạnh and Tuyên also influenced more people in Quảng Ninh and Phú Thọ provinces to join in.

The customers were required to have an account at the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Việt Nam (Vietcombank) to participate in the game on the internet.

Hạnh and his group’s members guided players on how to access the account and the secret code to log in.

After receiving their account details on their webpage, players also had to pay VNĐ300,000 (US$13.4) to activate the device for transferring and receiving money.

Players also had to transfer VNĐ2.6 million ($116.5) through their Vietcombank account following regulations on the site.

Players were told they would receive some VNĐ4 million ($179) one to nine days later.

The group would, however, shut down the website after appropriating money from the people who had joined.

From August 20 to September 1, the group earned VNĐ400 million ($17,900) from game players.

On September 1, Hanh and accomplices shut down the website Gold 889.com and set up a new site NewGold 889.com to further entice players.

The number of players who are waiting to receive money valued at over VNĐ2 billion ($89,700) from the game, had reached 1,000. — VNS
