LẠNG SƠN – The northern Lạng Sơn Province’s People’s Court has handed down two death penalties, two life sentences and 20 years’ imprisonment to a gang of drug traffickers.

The five men and women were found guilty of trafficking 162 cakes of heroin, weighing 62 kg.

According to the indictment, Lạng Sơn Police received a request from police in China’s Guangxi Province to identify the traffickers of 162 cakes of heroin hidden inside a dragon fruit container that had come from Việt Nam.

With documents provided by the Chinese side, the investigators identified Nguyễn Văn Quỳnh and his wife Nguyễn Phương Lan as the persons who directly transported the drugs. The couple live in Lạng Sơn City.

Expanding the investigation, the police arrested three others involved in the case.

All defendants pleaded guilty at the trial.

Trần Thị Hiền, 51 and Vũ Thị Hoa, 26, both residents of Hà Nội, were sentenced to death. Nguyễn Phương Lan, 50, and Đỗ Ngọc Oanh, 49, from Hà Nội were sentenced to life in prison, while Nguyễn Ngọc Quỳnh will spend 20 years in prison. — VNS
