NGHỆ AN — A whale that was stranded along Diễn Thịnh Commune’s coast in Diễn Châu District, central Nghệ An Province, since late last night was returned to the sea at noon today.

The whale, which was 16m long and weighed 15 tonnes, is said to be the largest that local residents have seen here.

Early this morning, locals reported the stranded whale, which was still alive, to the commune’s People’s Committee.

People and equipment were mobilised to dig sand and create a hole that was big enough for the whale to be moved into the sea.

By midday, the whale, which was wrapped with a net, was pulled by a coast guard boat and two local fishing boats into the sea.

The head of the district’s agriculture department, Lê Thế Hiếu, told online newspaper Vietnamnet.net that the boats would take the whale about ten nautical miles into the sea where the water is warm and deep.
