HẬU GIANG — Construction of a waste-to-energy plant in the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Hậu Giang began on Sunday.

The waste-to-energy plant covers 23ha in Phụng Hiệp District’s Hòa An Commune, with an investment from Greenity Hậu Giang Co.,Ltd of VNĐ1.32 trillion (US$56.9 million).

The plant will handle 300 tonnes of waste per day in the first phase to generate 6MW, while 600 million tonnes of waste are expected to be handled in the second phase to produce 12MW.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.

Trương Cảnh Tuyên, deputy chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said most domestic waste in the province is still disposed at three landfills in Phụng Hiệp and Long Mỹ districts and Vị Thanh City.

The new plant will treat domestic, industrial and agricultural waste.

It will help reduce landfills, protect the environment, and generate electricity for the national grid. — VNS
