Whirlwind damages houses in central provinces

HÀ TĨNH — Whirlwinds and hail caused extensive damage to property and crops in border districts in the central provinces of Hà Tĩnh and Nghệ An, online newspaper reported yesterday.

The heavy rainfall and whirlwinds occurred after several extremely hot days in Hương Khê District in Hà Tĩnh Province.

“The heavy rainfall along with strong whirlwinds occurred at about 3.30pm, damaging several houses in the communes of Phú Hương, Tân Phú and Trường Sơn, with some of the roofs blowing off,” Trịnh Xuân Thắng, chairman of the district’s Hương Xuân Commune, said.

The whirlwind downed trees along streets, while rice drying in yards was also damaged by the severe weather, he said.

Kỳ Sơn and Quế Phong districts in Nghệ An also suffered from hails and whirlwinds around the same time.

The whirlwind blew off the roofs of 11 houses and four rice warehouses in the communes of Phà Đánh, Huồi Tụ and Tà Ca.

Whirlwinds and heavy rain downed trees on Highway 47, damaging the electric grid in Quế Phong District.

No casualties were reported.

The northern and central provinces are expected to see heavy rains and whirlwinds for the next several days, according to weather forecasts. — VNS
