Việt Nam wins six medals at international math contest

All six Vietnamese students taking part in the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad in Romania won medals including one gold, according to the Quality Management Department under the Ministry of Education and Training.

HÀ NỘI — All six Vietnamese students taking part in the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad in Romania won medals including one gold, according to the Quality Management Department under the Ministry of Education and Training.

The gold medal was presented to 12th grader Nguyễn Quang Bin from Gifted High School of the Hà Nội University of Natural Science under te National University of Việt Nam.

Two silver medalists were Phan Minh Đức, 11th grader at the Hà Nội – Amsterdam Gifted High School and Trịnh Văn Hoàn, 12th grader at the Trần Phú Gifted High School in northern Hải Phòng City.

Trần Việt Hoàng from Hải Phòng City’s Trần Phú Gifted School, Trương Mạnh Tuấn from Gifted High School of the Hà Nội University of Natural Science and Đỗ Hoàng Việt from Nguyễn Quang Diệu Gifted School in the Mekong Delta province of Đồng Tháp took home bronze medals. All are 12th grade students.

The team will be welcomed back home at Nội Bài International Airport this Sunday. This year, Việt Nam ranked 20th in the medal tally.

The 59th International Mathematical Olympiad in Rumania was held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, between 3 and 14 July, attracting participants from 116 countries. The US delegation ranked first.

Last year, Vietnamese students bagged four gold, one silver and one bronze at the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Brazil.

Việt Nam first joined the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1974. So far, 42 students have taken part in the competition. — VNS
