TIỀN GIANG — Nguyễn Thanh Tùng, over 60 years old, a veteran living in Thạnh Mỹ Commune, Tân Phước District, has donated his family's land for the construction of rural roads in the community.

In total, he donated 9,100sq.m of land for newly-built and expanding rural roads.

The first time, he donated a 2,500sq.m land plot to build a flood-proof dike and protective road system for a pineapple-growing area.

The second time, he donated a 6,000sq.m land plot to expand an inter-communal road connecting Thạnh My Commune with neighbouring communes.

On the third time, he donated an extra 600sq.m of land to widen the inner route through Thanh Mỹ Commune.

Tùng said when he realised the community benefits and he promotes the exemplary role of the soldier when returning to daily life, with the support of his family, he decided to donate land for the development of transport to improve countryside life in Thạnh Mỹ.

Thạnh Mỹ was a remote commune where infrastructure facilities were poor.

"The donation of land to build roads in order to help the commune meet new rural standards, all people will benefit from that and I feel very happy,” he said.

Nguyễn Thanh Tùng was a honoured member of the Farmers’ Association, a typical member of the local group of Good Business and Production Veterans.

Tùng has lived in Tiền Giang since 1994. After nearly 30 years of working, he has built a fortune with 6.5 hectares of land for pineapple cultivation, each year yielding an output of 130 tonnes and earning a profit from VNĐ400-500 million.

From the profits he collected from the pineapple garden, over the years, Tùng has built a spacious house, taken care of his children's education, and built a sustainable business.

He was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Chairman of the People's Committee of Tiền Giang Province for his achievements.

Chairman of Thạnh Mỹ Commune People's Committee Nguyễn Văn Trung said that Nguyễn Thanh Tùng's contribution has had a wide impact in the community.

All households residing in areas where rural roads needed to be upgraded and expanded to meet new rural standards agreed to donate land.

Therefore, the construction units easily completed the works and put the new roads into use on schedule, helping people to achieve better results in production and improved living standards.

As a result, Thạnh Mỹ Commune was recognised to have completed 100 per cent of the criteria and awarded a new rural commune by the end of 2021.

With practical contributions to the community, Tùng was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Tân Phước District People's Committee for his achievements to build a new countryside. — VNS
