HCM CITY — A team of about 100 volunteers with 50 vehicles is offering a helping hand to HCM City authorities to transport medical equipment and other necessities to the community.
The city Department of Culture and Sports and the Thủ Đức city’s People’s Committee launched the volunteer team last week.
Trần Thế Thuận, director of the department, said at the launching ceremony that the team would support the frontline forces in tasks to help take care of local people’s health and lives.
The volunteers are mostly members of the all-terrain vehicle club and motor sport club of the HCM City Bicycle and Motor Sport Federation.
They will use their own vehicles, mostly pick-up trucks, to help local authorities transport food, medical equipment and other necessities to residents in locked-down zones and healthcare workers on the frontlines.
Ngô Quang Vinh, general secretary of the HCM City Bicycle and Motor Sport Federation, said the number of the volunteers would increase as many members of the federation want to participate in charity activities and support pandemic prevention and control work in the city.
The department has also called on people from other fields to join the team to increase transport capacity and help meet demand.
The team hopes to receive donations from individuals, businesses and organisations.
On the same day, the team transported 1,000 sets of medical protective clothing, four tonnes of rice, and bottled water, milk, vegetables and other items to frontline forces and needy people in the city. — VNS
