Police in the central city of Vinh stopped and fined a woman last Friday for driving a motorbike without its left mirror. The driver, Nguyễn Thị Minh Quyên, 29, also failed to show police a driving licence and vehicle registration.

Instead of admitting the violation and paying a fine, she called her family and waited for them to arrive.

When Quyên’s husband and her mother-in-law reached the scene, they took up her loud argument with police. When that didn’t help, Quyên grabbed a police officer by his neck, while the other two grabbed the motorbike and quickly drove away, said deputy police chief Nguyễn Hữu Cường.

On Sunday, Quyên and her husband were arrested and held in custody for alleged violation of the law and attacking law enforcement officers on duty. Their punishment is certain to be heavier than a simple fine for a missing mirror. Why did they think it was worth it? — VNS
