HÒA BÌNH — A man has been sentenced to death for trafficking 3.5kg of heroin.

Hòa Bình People’s Court on Thursday sentenced 47-year-old Ngô Dương Thanh, from Chùa Hang Ward, Thái Nguyên City.

He was caught by police carrying 10 packages of heroin in Tân Lạc District, Hòa Bình Province.

According to the indictment, Thanh knew a Mông man named Trư living in Hang Kia Commune, Mai Châu District, Hòa Bình Province. On April, 2019, Thanh phoned Trư looking for work on a construction site.

On April 16, Thanh and another man, Nguyễn Đức Thuận, 46, drove a motorbike to Hang Kia Commune to meet Trư.

But when they returned home, Trư asked Thanh to carry illegal narcotics to Hà Nội. Unluckily, they were stopped by police who found 3.5kg of heroin hidden in the motorbike.

It is understood Thanh was paid VNĐ20 million (US$860) to transport the heroin.

Police then searched Thanh’s home but found nothing related. In the meanwhile, Thuận, a drug addict, died before the trial took place so the trial of his involvement in the case was suspended. — VNS
