LẠNG SƠN — The Việt Nam Expressway Corporation has proposed to the Ministry of Transport to build the Hữu Nghị-Chi Lăng Expressway with a total initial investment of over VNĐ9.9 trillion (US$446.4 million).

This was announced by the corporation’s general director Mai Tuấn Anh.

Some $385.5 million of the total investment will be funded through loans from the Asia Development Bank, while the rest will be given by the Vietnamese government, he said.

The construction of the 44-km expressway, which is part of the Bắc Giang-Lạng Sơn Expressway, will play an important role in the socio-economic development of the northern region.

The expressway is being built to meet the demand due to increasing transport and to reduce traffic jams on National Road 1. It will also boost infrastructure development and further accomplish the plan for Việt Nam’s expressway development by 2020 with a vision toward 2030, which was ratified by the Prime Minister in March.

Under the proposal, the expressway will start from Cao Lộc District’s Đồng Đăng Township in Lạng Sơn Province. The Hữu Nghị international border gate and the Đồng Đăng Railway station are located in this province. It will end at Chi Lăng District’s Mai Sao Commune, in the same province.

The 23m-wide expressway will have four lanes, plus two lanes for emergency vehicles, with a maximum speed of 80km per hour.

The investors will be paid back in 30 years.

If the proposal is approved by the Ministry of Transport, work on the road will begin in the fourth quarter of this year and end by 2019. — VNS
