HCM CITY — HCM City faces a shortage of teachers at all levels of education, according to the city’s Department of Education.
The situation was mentioned at a press conference on socioeconomic issues and COVID-19 prevention and control in the city held recently.
Notably, the education sector is facing difficulties in recruiting teachers at primary and secondary schools.
The department has submitted a project to attract human resources for primary and secondary school teachers and retain teachers at schools to the People's Committee of HCM City.
In HCM City, the number of students, mainly at elementary schools, is expected to soar by 40,000 each year.
Thủ Đức City, District 12, Bình Tân District, Bình Chánh District, and Hóc Môn District, which are in the process of rapid urbanisation, report the highest growth of student numbers.
At the beginning of this school year, the city’s junior high schools lacked 2,467 teachers while the city needs 1,006 preschool teachers and 2,169 teachers in primary schools and 297 teachers in senior high schools.
Because of the severe shortage of teachers who teach technology, informatics, music, and art, schools will share teachers active in other schools or sign short-term contracts with teachers of these above-mentioned subjects.
Also at the conference, Nguyễn Văn Lâm, deputy Director of the HCM City Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs said that the number of workers returning to the city to work immediately after Tết (Lunar New Year) holiday has been higher than in the same period of previous years.
Particularly, by the end of February 1, over 94 per cent of businesses in HCM City have resumed their operations, and the number of employees returning to work reached more than 98 per cent.
Data from a survey showed that nearly 500 firms in the city have a high demand for the recruitment of more than 14,000 workers in the first quarter of 2023.
In the coming time, the department will organize online and in-person job transaction floors to help businesses and workers in southern provinces in recruitment, and introduce jobs for demobilized soldiers. — VNS
