HÀ NỘI — An exhibition by Vietnamese surrealist artists will take place on Thursday in Hà Nội.

Entitled ‘Surreality/Reality’, the exhibition presents a shared spirit: there is reality in surreality, there is surreality in reality.

Art Director of VICAS Art Studio, Bùi Quang Thắng, said the exhibition will show how surrealism has been expressed in Việt Nam.

“The artworks express the artists’ spirit of imagination and romance as well as the artists’ skillful realism techniques,” he said.

Phạm Huy Thông’s paintings are full of ideas about social and human issues; his expression is witty, though ironic and critical. Lê Nguyên Mạnh’s paintings are classically romantic, yet their characters are always associated with contemporary figures. Vũ Mười’s paintings are embedded with the nineteenth-century romance, yet his language is so much modern.

The paintings of Hoàng Khánh Du, a Tày man, are the most unique among all. His paintings are an example of the extension of the ethnic tradition in modern society, the co-existence of the past – future, divine – human. The art language in his paintings is especially new, such a difference from the refined style of Classical surrealism school.

The exhibition will run until September 26 at VICAS Art Studio, 32 Hào Nam Street. — VNS
