HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s top female chess player Võ Thị Kim Phụng was eliminated from the Women’s World Chess Championship 2018, which started on Saturday in Russia.

In the first round, Phụng, Elo 2,354, drew with Khotenashvili Bela, Elo 2,477. However, in the second round held on Sunday, she lost her nerve and was beaten by her opponent after 72 moves.

She is the only player to represent Việt Nam at this year’s tournament thanks to her victory in the national chess selection tournament.

Vietnamese Hoàng Thanh Trang, Elo 2,448, plays for the Hungarian team. After the first round, she drew to Danielian Elina from Armenia, Elo 2,426, and will continue the next matches in fast and blitz chess. — VNS
