HÀ NỘI — Residents in Hà Nội felt tremors at 8am on Monday morning.
The vibrations possibly resulted from a 5.4-magnitude earthquake at a depth of 10km hitting the northern mountainous province of Cao Bằng, according to Nguyễn Hồng Phương, deputy director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre from the Hà Nội-based Institute of Geophysics.
On Facebook, many Hanoians, especially those living in high-rise buildings, reported light tremors at different locations around the city.
People in other northern provinces including Lạng Sơn, Hải Phòng, Phú Thọ and Bắc Giang also said they saw furniture shaking and sliding.
Phương said this was an earthquake of medium strength and did not pose any danger to human life or property.
He warned residents of affected localities to stay calm as the centre is investigating to find the cause of the quake.
Just last week, on November 21, Hà Nội was rattled by tremors from a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that originated in northwestern Laos. No damage was reported. — VNS
