HÀ NỘI — The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has issued a written request to the People's Committee of Quảng Ninh Province urging local agencies to strictly handle violations in Hạ Long Bay.

The ministry said media and local residents have recently reported projects built in the city of Hạ Long that have affected the environment of the bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, online newspaper vietnamplus.vn reported.

The projects – including Tuần Châu tourism area, cruise docks at Mê Cung and Tiên Ông caves  have violated environmental protection rules.

The local government was also instructed to review new proposals as well as ongoing projects.

Quảng Ninh Province also needs to strengthen inspections of compliance with environmental protection and address violations.

The province was asked to report results of its inspections to the ministry before August 25. — VNS
