HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese student Vũ Hoàng Long won a third prize at the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in the US from May 12 to 17.

Long, who studies at the Lào Cai High School No 1 in the north-western province of Lào Cai, won the prize for his robot that feeds Parkinson’s patients using image processing technology.

It was the only prize won by the Vietnamese team for 10 projects it submitted.

Lê Huy Hoàng, a teacher and head of the Vietnamese delegation to the contest, said his team participated in many useful activities, met with outstanding students from all over the world and were inspired by some leading scientists.

They also touched base with top US universities and found out about scholarship opportunities, he said.

Last year too Việt Nam won a lone third prize though it also won one consolation prize.

Vietnamese students have been contesting in the Intel contest, the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, since 2012 and have won prizes at every event.

This year it attracted 1,842 students with 1,431 projects from 80 countries and territories. — VNS
