HÀ NỘI — Action on Poverty (AOP) in Việt Nam is going to implement a community-based tourism project to support women from ethnic minority groups in the northern mountainous province of Sơn La.
The announcement was made at the 30-year anniversary of the Australian NGO in Việt Nam, last weekend.
The beneficiaries are women living in two districts of Mộc Châu and Vân Hồ.
Tạ Văn Tuấn, country director of AOP in Việt Nam, said at the event: “Our long-term development programmes in the country will focus on mountainous and ethnic minority areas, especially helping women and children improve access to information and technology, and public services.”
John Kell, chair of the Board of Directors of AOP, said the organisation’s success over the last 30 years has been due to the support from local authorities and donors.
Over the past 30 years, the organisation has carried out 60 projects worth US$30 million, in 35 provinces and cities, benefitting over 250,000 vulnerable and disadvantaged people.
Professor Scott O’Neil, director of the World Mosquito Program, an initiative in twelve countries that works to protect the global community from mosquito-borne diseases such as Zika and dengue, said AOP has been a trusted partner for many years.
Tuấn said in Việt Nam, AOP is best known for its pioneering work in developing community-based biological control programmes for dengue fever.
Then, it expanded to agriculture, water and sanitation, food security, climate change, and improving livelihoods. — VNS
